Barely weeks after crude fell below $72 on hopes Hormuz would fully reopen, two tankers hit in the Red Sea sent Brent back over $100, and the fallout is now showing up everywhere from mortgage rates to airline stock prices.

The Number: $100.74 a Barrel

Brent crude oil rose to more than $100 a barrel on Thursday, its highest level since May, extending a five-day rally after attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea intensified concerns over global supply disruptions. Brent, the international benchmark, jumped 7.1% to $100.74, touching the highest price for the most actively traded contract since May.

What Triggered the Rally

Houthi rebels in Yemen widened the conflict by targeting vessels carrying Saudi oil through the Bab el-Mandeb strait, after having already declared a naval blockade on Saudi shipments days earlier. The attacks raised the prospect of disruptions at a second major oil transit chokepoint alongside the Strait of Hormuz, which has already been repeatedly contested throughout the broader US-Iran war.

Trump’s Threat to the Houthis

Underscoring the strategic weight markets are placing on the Red Sea route, President Trump threatened what he called major military punishment against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels if they continued attacking ships, a warning that places the Red Sea squarely alongside the Strait of Hormuz as a flashpoint the US considers a red line for global energy security.

How Far Oil Has Swung in Weeks

The scale of the reversal is notable: Brent had dropped below $72 a barrel just a few weeks earlier, close to where it stood before the US and Israel first attacked Iran to begin the war, on hopes the Strait of Hormuz would fully reopen to tanker traffic. The swing from below $72 to above $100 in a matter of weeks illustrates how quickly market sentiment has moved between de-escalation optimism and renewed alarm as the conflict has repeatedly widened rather than resolved.

Wall Street Feels It Immediately

US stocks fell sharply under the pressure of rising oil prices, which raise costs for businesses and erode consumer spending power. The S&P 500 sank 1.3%, putting it on track for its first back-to-back weekly loss since March. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 537 points, or 1%, as of midday trading, while the Nasdaq composite fell 2.2%. Losses extended abroad as well, with France’s CAC 40 dropping 1.6%, though Asian markets were mixed, with South Korea’s Kospi jumping 4.4% earlier in the day.

The Inflation and Rate Chain Reaction

The jump in oil prices threatens to worsen inflation just as it had begun decelerating faster than economists expected, a dynamic that could push the Federal Reserve and other central banks toward interest rate increases that would slow economies and pressure stock and investment prices further. The European Central Bank held its main interest rates steady at its Thursday meeting, but traders were pricing in a nearly 38% chance the Federal Reserve would hike the federal funds rate at its meeting the following week, up sharply from a nearly 12% probability just a week earlier, according to CME Group data. A hike would be the Fed’s first since 2023.

Mortgages, Gas Pumps, and Airlines

Higher oil prices pushed the yield on the 10-year Treasury note up to 4.70% from 4.67% the previous day, and up sharply from just 3.97% before the Iran war began, an increase that has already pushed long-term US mortgage rates to their highest levels in nearly a year. A gallon of regular gasoline averaged $4.09 across the United States, according to AAA, still below the roughly $4.56 high reached in May but up from just $3.93 a month earlier. Airlines with heavy fuel exposure were hit hardest on the market: American Airlines fell 8.4% despite reporting stronger spring profit than analysts expected, having raised airfares to offset higher fuel costs, while Southwest Airlines dropped 4.4% despite also beating profit and revenue expectations.

The Tesla and Alphabet Wildcard

Two of the heaviest drags on the broader market were unrelated to oil directly. Tesla tumbled 14% after reporting weaker quarterly profit than expected, a significant weight on the S&P 500 given its size within the index. Alphabet fell 6.7% despite delivering stronger profit and revenue than expected, as investors focused instead on the company’s raised full-year capital spending forecast for artificial intelligence investments, which had roughly doubled to nearly $45 billion from a year earlier, and on broader unease about whether AI spending across the industry will ultimately pay off.

Law and Legal Implications

Attacks on commercial oil tankers in international waters, if attributable to the Houthis as reported, raise the same international maritime law questions already at issue in the Strait of Hormuz dispute, particularly around freedom of navigation and the legality of non-state actors imposing what amounts to a blockade on a third country’s exports. Trump’s threat of major military punishment against a non-state armed group operating from Yemeni territory raises separate questions of proportionality and the legal basis for cross-border military action against an entity that is not itself a sovereign state party to the underlying US-Iran conflict.

Does the Fed Move Next Week

It remains unclear whether the Federal Reserve will actually raise rates at its upcoming meeting, given that the nearly 38% probability priced in by traders still implies markets see a hike as more likely not to happen than to happen. Whether Trump’s threatened military response against the Houthis materializes, and whether it would succeed in halting further tanker attacks, is not yet known. The durability of the current oil price level, following such a rapid swing from below $72 to above $100 in a matter of weeks, has not been tested against any actual resolution of either the Hormuz or Bab el-Mandeb disputes. Forensic Times continues to monitor Brent crude pricing, Federal Reserve signaling, and Houthi shipping threats in the Red Sea.
